Advent Poem Day 17

In winter our breath becomes a cloud,
A pillar to guide us onward, near
To him who lights the sky at night,
A pillar to guide us forward, near
To him who’s called the morning star,
A pillar, a cornerstone, who sends his breath,
the Spirit, the catalyst of clouds of witnesses.

This is the seventeenth poem in a series of Advent poems on Everyday Liturgy.  It’s almost Christmastime!  Tomorrow, the 17th, is when my prayer book politely requests that our prayers begin to anticipate the first coming of Christ.  The poems from now on will be focused on the humble, human birth of God.

I like the idea of our cold breath being like the pillar of cloud. I also like the line breaks that emphasize the nearness of God. By this logic, the breath of God is in our own breath! That’s a really powerful, startling idea.
