Advent Poem Day 5
The Journey of the Shepherds
In the cold of night
Past store fronts, past sale signs,
past spas,
Past the homeless, the helpless,
the has-beens,
Past the minister, the migrant, the
millionaire,
Past the watcher, the wanderer, the
wanna-be
Past the peddler, the priest, and
the pedestrians
Past the trader, the trendy, the
trial lawyer
Past police stations, past pubs,
past post offices
Past the divorced, the distraught,
the damaged
Past the janitors, the judges, the
generals
Past the soldiers, the searchers,
the spenders,
Past the bakers, the breadwinners,
the brokers,
Past the lovers, the liars, and the
lender
a star will lead the way.
This poem is the fifth in a series of Advent poems on Everyday
Liturgy. Want to join the fun? Let us know about your Advent poetry

Day 1: We come before the Lord and wait
Day 2: We are weary Lord of life
Day 3: We think of coming as the final
Day 4: The world is a desert

Thomas,
This one is so beautiful! I would like to use it in our community’s celebration of Advent and the end of term; I am leading the reflection that ends the night. Is that alright? I’ll put your name on it.
Yes, that’s great! Let me know how the celebration goes and how you use it (i.e. responsive reading, dramatic reading, etc.)
