What I've Learned From Stress On Thursdays

Thursday is the "I hit a wall" day.  After three days of busyness, and for most Christians it is four because of Sunday, Thursday is the day we gasp for air and look longingly at Friday, that day when we can run out of the office like schoolchildren at 5 o'clock.

Thursday is usually one of the most productive days for me.  It's hard to do long and intensive tasks after lunch on Friday because there will be the weekend break, so I try to do as much on Thursday as I can.

Stress wise, Thursday can be a killer.  It is Thor's day after all, and you may feel thunderbolts heading your way.  Stress has been compounded, especially if you are procrastinator (I can say I am not, praise God! But I think that has to do with some of my "now, now, NOW!" issues...).  If the thunder claps and lightning bolts of Thursday are leaving you feeling tired and unaccomplished as you move into Friday and the weekend, try these three things:

1) Get as much done as possible, but stay sane.  Don't ruin your Thursday by working into the wee-hours and then not having any time to relax and unwind.  There is always tomorrow.

2) Set goals on post-it notes.  My post it note read of four things I needed to accomplish before and during my morning coffee break.  Coffee is always a great incentive!

3) Take breaks to stay focused.  Many experts say to turn off IM, e-mail, phones, mp3 players---anything that can be distracting when you want your best and most efficient work to be done.  Get some work done, then reward yourself with a distraction break, then turn them all off again.

As part of the HigherCallings blog network, I have been made keen to what others are doing in the blogosphere concerning work and faith.  This week Robert Hzurek of Middle Zone Musings is leading a series on What I've Learned From Stress.  It's kind of like a synchroblog of sorts.  If you blog, feel free to join in too.  I have decided to write a post on each day and how stress relates to it.

A great way to view Thursdays, Thomas. Thanks for the tips - I feel more productive already!

(Er, by the way, my last name is H-r-u-z-e-k. But no worries; I'm used to it by now!) ;-)

I'm not a Christian, so for me Sunday isn't more sacred than other days. One of my favorite questions right now is "How can I connect with the sacredness of this moment?" It's powerful, and it can be applied any time.

Though we do it in different ways and think about this in a different religious context, I too try to connect with the sacredness of every moment.  That's why I named this blog Everyday Liturgy.  It's my attempt at helping myself and others connect with the sacredness of worshiping God each day of the week and moment of the day.
