Have you read The Shack? A Contest.
Have you read The Shack? I haven’t, and want to know whether it is worth a read by this recent MA English grrad. If you have read it (or even if you haven’t), try to convince me to read it in fifty words or less in the comments box. Humorous, ironic, and witty answers are encouraged.
Does it live up to the hype?
The best answer will receive a special prize, a book:
Finding God in The Shack by Randall Rauser
Euguene Peterson says, "If you have ever had a conversation on The Shack, whether with an
enthusiast or a critic, you will want to invite this skilled and
accessible theologian into the conversation. Before you have read a
dozen pages you will know why we need to keep company with theologians.
They help us keep our conversations on God intelligent, informed , and irenic."
If you have the best short and sweet answer convincing me to read The Shack this book will be all yours.
The contest will be open for two weeks. Please have your answers in the comments by midnight June 15th. On June 17th I will choose the winner and publish the winning answer and the author’s victory speech on Everyday Liturgy.
Since I will need to contact you please have a link to either your website or your e-mail address in your comment.
Thanks for your participation and good luck!
Hi,
Please read it. I am getting ready to read it for the third time…I read it first last summer, then again in January, and now I am almost ready to read it for a third time. It has become my favorite book and I have told so many others to read it.
The book is sad…I cried all through it. But I love how Mr. Young portrays Jesus, God and the Spirit. It is so comforting. I know there has been so much controversy written about this book, nostly coming from mainstrean Fundamentalists.
The book filled my heart and broke it at the same time…with each reading. It is so powerful and so intense.
I hope you enjoy it.
Cindy
Yes, because my mother said it was worth reading.
You’re not going to call her a liar, are you?
(I haven’t read it, yet, but I’ve borrowed her copy to read soon.)
The best reason to read The Shack: so you can feel better about your previous decision not to read The Shack.
Apart from the Bible I think The Shack is one of the only books I’ve read that’s actually inspired an exclamation of praise and worship from me and a desire to pray more and feel closer to God. Believe the hype!
It is well-meaning, and I could see it having some value for those in need of a paradigm shift re: the Father’s love, etc. But it is not literary genius by a long shot. Don’t get all the hype.
I know the contest is over – I just wanted to put my two cents worth in. I recently read it and it was hands down the best book I’ve ever read. It forces you to take God out of the “box” and remove your attached ideas in your visual of him.
It reminds me he is not a he, or a she, or an it, or any other thing… God just IS. It reminds me – and this is a hard one for me- but it reminds me that he DELIGHTS in spending time with me. Messed up sinner that I am, he delights in spending time with me. I need to write this down somewhere where I’ll see it regular; maybe it’ll become more common knowledge to me.
Delight is a beautiful thing.
