Who’s Who of Contemporary Christian Writing

I have been working hard at completing my MA in English at Rutgers, so I have been out of touch with the Christian writer’s world for some time now.  A lot has changed even in the past two years, with blog and online writing being legitimized as a proper outlet for good writing, as opposed to the graveyard of hacks who couldn’t get published.

I have been reading lots of non-Christian authors of literature, but I don’t know who, besides Donald Miller or Luci Shaw, is involved in the artistic pursuit of written words.

Who should I know about in the Christian literary world?  Writing from blogs, online journals, and websites are welcome, as well as published authors.

There is opportunity in this, as I am scouting talent for a to-be-announced project I am a part of, so if you want to recommend yourself, please do so.

    Thomas,

You definitely need to include Lisa Samson (http://lisasamson.typepad.com/) to your list.

Paul Young (http://windrumors.com/), author of “The Shack,” is huge at the moment, but who knows if he’ll be able to write a compelling follow-up.

    Who else? Hmmm …

I’m not sure if her books are considered “Christian fiction,” but I hear good things about Marilynne Robinson (author of “Gilead,” “Housekeeping,” and other books).

He hasn’t written fiction recently (I don’t think!), but Frederick Buechner might be another person to consider. Again, I hear good things, but I’ve honestly never read any of his stuff! I know, I need to change that …

My friend Kevin D. Hendricks has written two online novels now (http://www.monkeyouttanowhere.com/dandelions/ and http://www.monkeyouttanowhere.com/blacktop/), which is pretty impressive, I’d say.

OK that’s all I got for ya, man. I’m sure I’m forgetting some really good people … (sigh)

Good luck! I look forward to hearing more about the secret project.

    Shalom,
    Steve K.

Ah, you’ve hit upon my world. In addition to Lisa Samson and Marilynne Robinson mentioned above, I’d add:
    Charles Martin
Jeffrey Overstreet (Auralia’s Colors in the fantasy genre)
    Athol Dickson
    Michael Snyder
    Mary DeMuth
    Leif Enger
also, an author who will be coming out with his first fiction book soon: J. Mark Bertrand.
Some of the above blog at The Master’s Artist (in addition to their own blogs and their fiction writing).
Honestly, I wasn’t impressed with The Shack as far as literature. (In fact, I thought it was poor writing.)
Looking forward to hearing about this project!
